Back-to-School Clothes Shopping
Back To School Shopping Tips from Collins Cleaners
When shopping for Back-to-School Clothes Keep These Tips in Mind…
- Set a clothing budget. When you know how much you plan to spend ahead of time, it’s much easier to avoid over spending. Make a list of all the clothes you think you’ll need to buy for one school year, then estimate how much you’d like to spend on each item. Once you have your budget, hold yourself accountable and don’t spend more than you planned to spend.
- Make a list of clothing pieces you already own. Have a mental list of the items already in your closet and, when you’re considering purchasing a new item, think of what you already own that might pair well with the new item. This stretches your clothing budget and your wardrobe. Statement pieces that work well all on their own are an exception, of course, as is clothing purchased for special occasions.
- Know your measurements. Keep notes in your phone with your family’s hip, waist, and chest measurements as well as S-XXL and shoe sizes. This makes back-to-school shopping easy if the family member you’re buying for isn’t with you to try on clothes or shoes. - Start broad then edit. Whether you’re shopping online or in-store, add all the pieces you like to your cart, then scale down from there. You’ll be better able to compare your choices when you bring them all together to decide which ones you like best. Keep in mind your mental closet for mixing & matching to expand your wardrobe with fewer pieces. If you can wear a new item with several you already own, one new piece of clothing can add several new “outfits” to your wardrobe.
- Diversify your wardrobe. We all have clothes we gravitate towards...it may be black dresses or a certain style of jeans. In reality, there are only so many black dresses or ripped jeans any one person needs. Having too many of the same kind of clothing just clogs up your closet making it harder to get dressed in the morning. If you find yourself gravitating toward another black dress, ask yourself: Do I like this new one better than the one I already have? How many of these do I really need? Chances are for most people, the answer is no more than two. Unless they’re wearing a uniform to school!
- Make a wish list. Keep a list of clothing items you need or really want. When you go shopping, use your list to stay focused searching for those items. Shopping from a pre-planned list helps you stay on budget, avoid multiple shopping trips, and keeps you from buying things you don’t really need or want.
- Look for quality. Often we’re tempted to sacrifice quality for price when it comes to buying clothes. In the long run, you can save money buying clothes that will last versus replacing items more often. Look for hanging threads or broken stitches in the seams, both signs of poor quality. Try on clothes, if possible, to determine how an item fits and feels...does it feel too tight? Does the neckline sag now that it’s on your body? Always check return policies, especially for defective merchandise...most reputable stores will take returns no questions asked.
