Blanket Cleaning

As the weather begins to change and the temperatures fall, the time for warm, fluffy blankets is upon us. However, when you pull out your bedding from deep in your closet, you realize that the pieces that you love have lost their once voluminous and soft state. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to get your blankets back to the cozy comfort you enjoy.

Start with a Gentle Clean

As eager as you may be to cozy up with your favorite blanket, it’s best to wash the piece following its removal from your seasonal storage. Prior to starting, it’s important to find the proper fabric conditioner or detergent in order to preserve the quality of your most-loved cover. You may be inclined to do a quick wash and dry, however, it’s best to set your washer on a delicate cycle using cold water. Fuzzy-based materials don’t do the best in the dryer which is why you should air dry or use the lowest heat setting on your dryer to dry the bedding once the wash is complete.

Bring Back your Bed Sheets

As an act of simple hygiene and comfortability, it’s best to wash your bedsheets once a week or once every other week. This will not only keep your sheets from becoming dirty or stained, but it will also allow them to stay fresh-smelling and pleasant to sleep on. The best way to wash your bedding is not to use laundry detergent, but to use dish-detergent instead. If you combine about a cup of white vinegar with one tablespoon of dish soap and leave the sheets overnight to soak, you will end up with not only great feeling sheets but great smelling ones as well. Following the soak, it’s advisable to then put the sheets through a cycle in the washing machine with half of a cup of baking soda. Then, in just a matter of a day, you have sheets that are like new!

Fleece Blanket Already Lost its Softness? Complete a Hot Cycle with Vinegar

For many, fleece blankets are the epitome of cozy for the fall and winter seasons. Yet, after even just one year of use, they often lose their soft feel and become rough or uncomfortable to use. No problem! Simply throw your blanket in the wash with hot water and add about a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment and reap the benefits of your like-new blanket.

If All Else Fails, It May Be Time to Rotate

One of the best parts of the cooler season is seasonal shopping, and in the instance that your bedding has lost all hope then it is the perfect household good on which to splurge. As much as you might love the large blanket that you’ve had for years, there comes a time when it’s suitable to make a rotation of your bedding. The best part is that if you want a quick replacement, you can find a variety of inexpensive options for as low as $15. For the cost of a single meal eaten out, you can be comfortable and warm for many winters to come!
